Meyer Gives Speech at WashULaw Scholars in Law Dinner

On Thursday November 2nd, John S. Meyer, Jr., Capes Sokol Shareholder, addressed an audience of over 300 members of the Washington University Law School community at the WashU Law Scholars in Law Dinner. The annual event honored scholarship recipients and their donors.

Following remarks by Chancellor Mark Wrighton and Law School Dean Nancy Staudt, John spoke about the importance of the Scholars in Law Program:

“There is no doubt that Scholarship support is a major factor in the Law School’s consistent ranking within our nation’s top 18 law schools by U.S. News and World Reports.  Scholarships help attract students with high GPAs and LSAT scores.  In this heavily weighted category, our law school ranks in the top 10.  Bright, motivated students elevate classroom discourse and inspire faculty to bring their “A” game to class.

As a result, WashU Law grads are better educated and better prepared to serve their clients and communities.  Our graduates are appreciated by employers.  This leads to high job placement rates, fulfilling a crucial responsibility to our students.  In job placement, another important factor to U.S. News, we rank in the top 10 law schools. These are all very good reasons to support a Scholar in Law.  But the strongest reason my wife, Laura, and I will continue to support a Scholar year after year is because it feels good to connect with a law student.  It is affirming to let someone know that we care enough about his or her education and the benefits well prepared lawyers bring to society to defray a portion of his or her tuition.”

A long time financial supporter of WashU Law, John created the John Meyer Scholar in Law in 2010 to help fund a student’s legal endeavors. He is a strong believer that the “Scholar in Law” program is the best and most effective way to attract students to the law school and makes a personal effort to develop relationships with his past and present Scholar in Law recipients.

“The knowledge that Scholarship recipients will be inspired to do what they can after graduation to advance our law school, profession, and society should feel good to all Scholarship donors. I find great joy in seeing these students flourish in law school and then thrive in the legal profession after graduation.”

About the Scholars in Law Program:

The Washington Univeristy School of Law seeks to attract students who have the talent and perseverance to use their education to benefit society – but the cost of education is one of the most compelling challenges facing the school and students.  The investments of the annual Scholars in Law supporters allow the university to attract the best and the brightest students and the most diverse student body.
